Heading to Santa Fe

I leave for Santa Fe this weekend. I plan to get in some golf and some sun before starting school next Friday.

Today, we took some time to do a little shopping at the Farmers' market in San Rafael. For anyone considering Pacific, if you live in Marin, the fruits and vegetables that you can get at these Farmers' markets are fantastic. We went with some friends who will be starting at Pacific next week too.

This morning, Mick (the other new dental student) and I drove into Pacific. We left at 7am and we arrived at the front steps of the school at 7:22. There wasn't any traffic! So, our daily commutes shouldn't end up being too bad.

I'll make a longer entry on ddsdiary.com after I get back from the trip. Have a good July 4 weekend!

New Direction

I think I'm going to abandon the idea of posting links to news articles unless I think they are VERY interesting. Up to this point, I've posted things that seemed relevant to dentistry. Unfortunately, I've grown a little bored. So, starting on July 8 (the first day of school), I'm going to post daily updates on what is going on at Pacific. Maybe some of you predents will find it helpful or even interesting. I know I get excited when I hear what other dental students are doing. Any comments about this change in direction are welcome!

Computer Survey, 1st year Guide and Budget Increase

This week I got some more information from Pacific. They sent all incoming students some information about computer orientation on June 9, as well as, a survey about our computer hacking skills. Apparently, on June 9, depending on our skills, we will be assigned to an advanced, normal, or beginner group. While the orientation lasts from 9am to 4pm, each skill group will only last a few hours (so I won't actually be there all day on Saturday).

The letter also had a list of FAQs. One of the questions often asked is where the 1st year students computer lab is located. The answer is the pre-clinic laboratory. Looks like we will spend a lot of our lives in the sim lab.

I also recieved the 1st Year's Guide in the mail. The class of 2007 put it together. It gives us the inside scoop on what to expect, what to wear, what to bring to school, who our advisors are, and some other tidbits. Overall, I thought it was useful.

Annie and I applied to have our budget increased. If you have children, Marco (on a case-by-case basis) will review your situation and determine whether a very small budget increase is appropriate. We hope we are approved so it'll make meeting our month-to-month expenses a little easier.

I'm still going to use the blog to post news, but I'm also going to make more posts of this nature. Stay tuned!

Dentist Pleads guilty to Injecting Bodily Fluids Into Patient's Mouths

"Dr. John Hall,44, was accused by several of his patients of injecting his bodily fluids into their mouths during their regular office visits between March and October of 2003. Hall said he had done nothing wrong, but this incident had caused him depression and a lot of financial burden as well. He said he had been making $100,000 a month as a dentist, but now he is applying for work in a flooring company in Jacksonville, Florida and expects to make $38,000 a year."

Are you kidding me? $100,000 a month and the whole time he was squirting his fluid into people! Absolutley disgusting--check it out for yourselves!

Man Died after Sex Experiment Went Wrong

"A man died after a sexual experiment involving dental anaesthetic went badly wrong, an inquest heard today."

'Welcome to the dentist. Massage?'

"A concierge greets you at the Glenview dental office of William J. Cohen. Not a receptionist... not the sound of screeching tooth drills... A concierge."

Here's an interesting article on spa dentistry. I wonder if I'll ever delve into this type of dentistry.
